Jacques Grolet, a native of La Rochelle, France, was a member of the ill-fated La Salle Expedition, spent five years in captivity with the Indians, and was rescued by the Spaniards. As was custom in those days with non-Spaniards, his name was changed to Santiago Gurule. On 10 Dec 1699, he married Elena Gallegos in Bernalillo, NM and a new surname was introduced into the region.
